Very cold-sensitive, basil is sown in warmth in March-April and only goes outside after mid-May. Harvested by regularly pinching the tips, it produces until the first cool autumn nights.

The tips that matter
- Always pinch the tops above a pair of leaves: the plant branches out instead of flowering.
- Water in the morning at the base without wetting the leaves — and never cold water on a plant in full sun.
- Below 10 °C at night basil blackens: bring pots inside from September.
