🥒 Cucumber
Cucumis sativus
Cold-sensitive but productive, cucumbers are sown indoors in April and planted out in mid-May. Trained up a trellis they take little ground space and give straight, clean fruit from July to September.

The tips that matter
- Grow them vertically: the fruit stays clean and healthy, and picking is much easier.
- Water regularly to avoid bitter cucumbers — bitterness comes from water stress.
- Pick every 2-3 days: one forgotten fruit turning yellow shuts down the whole plant's production.
