Solanum lycopersicum
The star of the vegetable garden, tomatoes are sown indoors from February to April and planted out after the last frost, around mid-May. Well tended, they crop from July until the first frosts.

The tips that matter
- Water at the base, never on the leaves — it is the best prevention against blight.
- On indeterminate varieties, pinch out the side shoots that form in leaf axils so the plant puts its energy into fruit.
- Bury the stem up to the first leaves at planting time: roots will form all along it and the plant will be far sturdier.
