🍓 Strawberry

Fragaria × ananassa

Strawberries are best planted in August-September (or March-April) to fruit the following spring. Everbearing varieties crop from May to frost; June-bearers concentrate everything into one flush.

When to harvest strawberries?

Harvest strawberries from May to September.

The tips that matter

  • Set the crown exactly at soil level — buried it rots, proud it dries out.
  • Mulch under the fruit (straw, pine needles): clean berries and fewer slugs.
  • Cut the runners of everbearers through summer: they exhaust the plant at the expense of fruit.
  • Replace the plants every 3-4 years — production drops sharply after that.
